This was my first attempt at making this cake. I always viewed it as a difficult dish. However, after trying it out, I was surprised on how easy it was to make. You can find these cakes at any middle eastern sweet shop. The Lebanese Sfouf cake is also a primary cake that is served to guests. If you ever visit a Middle Eastern home, most likely, you will be served this cake.
I love the way this cake turned out. It was nice and moist. The color was beautiful. I am not a fan of the color yellow but this cake really has a bright beautiful yellow hue. Making it was very easy. The ingredients I used are found in the majority of cakes out there. However, this recipe calls for turmeric and anise seed. I am familiar with turmeric however, anise seed was new to me. You cannot make this recipe anise seed so there are no substitutions I know of. I needed to fined ground anise seed. I couldn’t fine ground anise seed at my local market. I was able to find whole anise seeds that I was able to grind in a blender. My mother told me that the Middle Eastern markets sell ground anise seeds. So if you have a middle eastern market near by, grab some ground anise seed for his recipe. Otherwise, just grind it in a blender. Turmeric is easy to find every where so you should not have any trouble.
